ABSTRACT A strategy for genetic improvement of coffee Coffea canephora plants is to aggregate through artificial crossings the characteristics of the Conilon botanical variety, such as shorter height and drought resistance, with the higher average grain size and resistance to pests and diseases of the Robusta variety. Efficiently separating the clones into these two groups with the aid of appropriate analytical procedures makes field tasks easier for professionals and, thus, allows the systematic production of intervarietal hybrids. This study verifies if the non-parametric discriminant analyzes of the k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) and k-average neighbors (k-AN) would be able to correctly classify 130 coffee clones in their botanical varieties previously designated as Conilon, Robusta and Intervarietal Hybrids populations from ten quantitative agronomic characteristics, including the processed coffee beans yield, considering the existing population genetic divergence. These characteristics were found to be good discriminatory variables and the discriminant analyzes k-NN and k-AN, based on the principle of similarity by neighborhood, classified the clones with high hit rates. The k-AN discriminant analysis was able to better discriminate intervarietal hybrids from the group clones Conilon. The results correctly reflected the genetic diversity between the botanical varieties and intervarietal hybrids of Coffea canephora, allowing us to conclude that these classification methods can assist breeders in the main task of discriminating Conilon from Robusta clones.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar a divergência genética entre matrizes de C. canephora visando desenvolver progênies que associem características das variedades botânicas Conilon e Robusta à expressão do vigor do híbrido. Para isso, foram avaliadas dez características morfológicas e produtivas de 130 clones das variedades botânicas Conilon, Robusta e de híbridos intervarietais, ao longo de dois anos, em delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições de quatro plantas por parcela. Para seleção de genitores foi utilizada a técnica de componentes principais associada a pontos referenciais obtidos a partir da média de cada variedade botânica. Os dois primeiros componentes principais permitiram a separação das variedades botânicas e dos híbridos intervarietais com uma representação da variabilidade contida nos dados originais de 76% no primeiro ano e 69% no segundo ano. Apesar da significância da interação genótipos x anos, observou-se pouca diferença no agrupamento ao longo do tempo, o que está associado às maiores estimativas de repetibilidade observadas nesse estudo. Observou-se que as matrizes 16-1-81I, 9-1-82L e 13-1-61I da variedade botânica Robusta e as matrizes 167I, 890E e 130I da variedade botânica Conilon apresentaram maior potencial para a obtenção de ganhos com a seleção.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to quantify the genetic divergence of potential Coffea canephora parents, with the goal of developing progenies that associate the best traits of the Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties for hybrid vigor expression. Thus, 10 morphological and productive characteristics of 130 clones of Conilon and Robusta botanical varieties and their intervarietal hybrids were evaluated over 2 years. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replicates of four plants per plot. For selection of parents, the main component analysis was used to associate values with reference points obtained from the average of each botanical variety. The first two principal components allowed for the separation of the botanical varieties representing the variability contained in the original data with 76% for the first year and 69% for the second year. Although, the genotype × years interaction had significant effects, there were minor differences in the grouping from one year to the next, which is associated with the higher repeatability estimates observed in this study. It was observed that crosses with the 16-1-81I, 9-1-82L, and 13-1-61I parents of the botanical variety Robusta and the 167I, 890E, and 130I parents of the Conilon botanical variety presented greater potential for obtaining selection gains.

RESUMO: O objetivo desse trabalho foi mensurar o progresso genético da produtividade de café beneficiado a partir da seleção de clones de Coffea canephora, com a obtenção de estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos e de ganhos com a seleção ao longo de três safras. Para isso, a produção de café beneficiado de 130 clones foi avaliada nas safras de 2014, 2015 e 2016 em ensaio clonal instalado em blocos completos casualizados, com quatro plantas por parcela e seis repetições, em espaçamento de 3 x 2m na estação experimental da Embrapa Rondônia no município de Ouro Preto do Oeste - RO. A estimação dos parâmetros genéticos e predição dos valores genotípicos foram realizadas utilizando procedimento REML/BLUP (máxima verossimilhança restrita/melhor predição linear não-viesada). As estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos quantificaram predominância do componente genético na expressão dessa característica, indicando a possibilidade de obtenção de ganhos com a seleção de plantas. O progresso genético da produtividade de café beneficiado com a seleção de 10% dos melhores clones foi de 49,88%, que equivale a um incremento na produtividade média de 42,57 sacas.ha-1 para 66,95 sacas.ha-1. A média harmônica da performance relativa dos valores genotípicos (MHPRVG) permitiu identificar clones de desempenho superior estável em condições tropicais da região Amazônica.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to select Coffea canephora clones of superior processed coffee productivity based on the estimates of the genetic parameters and of genetic progress with the plant selection. For this, the production of processed coffee from 130 clones was evaluated from 2014 to 2016 in a clonal test, installed in randomized complete blocks with four plants per plot and six replications, spaced 3 × 2m at the experiment station Embrapa Rondônia in the municipality of Ouro Preto do Oeste - RO. The estimation of genetic parameters and prediction of genotypic values were performed using REML/BLUP procedure (Restricted Maximum Likelihood/Best Unbiased Linear Prediction). Estimates of the genetic parameters confirmed the predominance of the genetic component in the expression of this trait, indicating the possibility of obtaining gains with the plant selection. Genetic progress of processed coffee productivity from the selection of 10% of the best clones was 49.88%, which is equivalent to an increase in average productivity from 42.57 bags.ha-1 to 66.95 bags.ha-1. The use of the harmonic mean of the genetic values helped to identify the clones of superior performance, with higher adaptability and stability for the northern region of Brazil.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi estimar parâmetros genéticos e avaliar o progresso genético dos principais componentes da produção de grãos do pinhão-manso. Para isso, foram avaliadas quatro procedências de pinhão-manso em ensaio de blocos ao acaso, utilizando três repetições de 36 plantas, em espaçamento de 3x2m. O número de cachos por planta foi uma das características mais importantes para a produção de grãos. A uniformidade de maturação dos frutos apresentou efeito ambiental predominante, sendo bastante limitado o progresso genético a ser obtido com a seleção baseada nesta característica. O progresso genético estimado com a seleção de procedências pode ser considerado pequeno: 11%, 7% e 18% no 1°, 2° e 3° anos pós-plantio, respectivamente. A seleção dos 30 melhores indivíduos dentro de procedências permitiu a obtenção de ganhos de 29%. O melhoramento dessa oleaginosa deve considerar estratégias de geração de variabilidade, como a recombinação de indivíduos divergentes e introdução de novos acessos.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and evaluate the genetic progress of Jatropha curcas L. agricultural traits from 2008 to 2011. Four Brazilian provenances were evaluated in a randomized block design using three replicates of 36 plants at a spacing of 3x2m. The number of bunches was one of the most important traits for grain production. The fruit ripening uniformity showed predominant environmental effect, being very limited the genetic progress to be achieved by plant selection. The estimated genetic progress with the selection of provenances may be considered low: 11%, 7% and 18% at 1th, 2th and 3th years respectively. The selection of the 30 best individuals within provenances provided a genetic progress of 29%. The genetic improvement of this oil crop should consider strategies to increase the genetic variability by breeding and introduction of new genotypes.

A análise de coeficiente de correlação é uma importante ferramenta no estudo da associação entre os caracteres de feijão-caupi e para avaliar a contribuição de cada fator na produtividade desta cultura. Objetivou-se investigar as relações genotípicas entre a produtividade de grãos em feijão-caupi e alguns componentes de produção e características agronômicas, utilizando a análise de trilha para decompor as correlações em seus efeitos diretos e indiretos. O experimento foi realizado no período de maio a agosto de 2010. Foram utilizadas as cultivares BR8 Caldeirão, IPEAN V69, BRS Guariba e BR17 Gurguéia. Estimou-se as correlações genotípicas entre pares de caracteres e seus efeitos diretos e indiretos considerando os componentes de produção (número de vagens.planta-1 e número de sementes.vagem-1), caracteres agronômicos (altura da planta, área foliar e peso da matéria seca da parte aérea) e a produtividade de grãos. O diagrama de trilha com duas cadeias mostrou-se adequado em explicar as relações entre componentes primários, secundários e produtividade, considerando as altas estimativas dos coeficientes de determinação (R²) e baixos efeitos residuais. O número de vagens.planta-1 e a área foliar foram os caracteres mais correlacionados com a produtividade e se mostram eficientes em praticar-se seleção indireta, com o intuito de obter ganhos genéticos sobre o rendimento de grãos. Também mostraram ser caracteres importantes sobre os efeitos indiretos do número de sementes vagem-1, altura da planta e peso da matéria seca da parte aérea.

Analysis of correlation coefficients is an important tool, not only in the study of the association between the characteristics of the cowpea but also in evaluating the contribution of each factor to the productivity of the crop. The objective was to investigate the genotypic relationships between grain productivity in the cowpea and various production components and agronomical characteristics, by using path analysis to break down such correlations in both their direct and indirect effects. The experiment was carried out from May to August of 2010. The cultivars used were BR8 Cauldron, IPEAN V69, BRS Guariba and BR17 Gurguéia. Genotypical correlations between pairs of characteristics, together with their direct and indirect effects were estimated, taking into consideration production components (number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod), agronomic features (plant height, leaf-area and shoot dry-matter weight) and grain productivity. A path diagram containing two path-chains was sufficient to explain the relationships between the primary and secondary components and productivity when the high estimates of the coefficients of determination (R²) and the low residual effects were considered. The number of pods per plant, and leaf-area were those characteristics which most correlated with productivity, and would appear to be efficient for indirect selection, where the intention is to obtain genetic gains in grain yield. They were also seen to be important characteristics for the indirect effects of the number of seeds per pod, plant height and shoot dry-matter weight.

São poucos os softwares disponíveis para a análise de parentesco e, até a presente data, nenhum pode realizar a análise de parentesco para organismos poliplóides, com número par (2k) de cromossomos. Implementou-se junto ao programa R uma rotina capaz de executar a análise de parentesco para qualquer nível 2k de ploidia, número de indivíduos (ou populações) e número de gerações envolvidas na árvore genealógica. A função principal, calc.rxy() calcula o coeficiente de endogamia (F X) de cada indivíduo; coeficientes de parentesco (rXY) entre dois indivíduos quaisquer; e coeficiente de parentesco médio, variância, mínimo e máximo, para cada indivíduo. Ela pode mostrar a matriz completa de parentesco ou uma submatriz pré-definida de indivíduos selecionados. Adicionalmente, foram incluidas funções que servem para identificar erros de redundância dos dados originais (checar.nomes()) e para identificar os pares de indivíduos com rXY superior a certo limite especificado pelo pesquisador (corte.rxy()). Essas funções podem ser usadas na análise de pedigrees com um número elevado de indivíduos e poderão ser utilizadas pela comunidade científica livremente, sem restrições à plataforma operacional utilizada. Destaca-se a vantagem em se poder trabalhar com qualquer nível 2k de ploidia, mesmo quando existe a possibilidade de certo indivíduo ser oriundo de autofecundação, aspecto comum em várias espécies vegetais.

There are few softwares available to analyze relatedness among individuals and, to date, none can perform this analysis for polyploid organisms, with even number (2k) of chromosomes. This work implements within package able to execute an analysis of relatedness for any 2k-ploidy level, number of individuals (or populations) and number of generations in the pedigree. The main function, calc.rxy(), calculates the inbreeding coefficient (F X) of each individual; coancestry coefficients (rXY) between any two individuals; and average, variance, minimum and maximum of coancestry coefficient for each selected individual. A complete matrix of coancestry or any sub-matrix for selected individuals can be output. In addition, functions are included to identify reduntant information in the original data set (checar.nomes()) and to identify pairs of individuals with rXY higher than an upper bound specified by the researcher (corte.rxy()). These functions can be used to analyze a pedigree with a large number of individuals and can be implemented by the scientific community freely, regardless of the platform in use. The advantage of allowing to work with any 2k-ploidy level is highlighted, even when some individual is originated from selfing, a common scenario for many plant species.

Estimaram-se as correlações fenotípicas, genotípicas e ambientais entre o número de cachos por planta e a produção anual e suas combinações em dendê (Elaeis guineensis). Os coeficientes de repetibilidade e de determinação também foram estimados, com o objetivo de indicar o período mínimo de colheita necessário para se acessar o potencial genotípico das progênies avaliadas. A correlação genotípica entre o número de cachos e a produção foi negativa, indicando que, se forem selecionados os genótipos com maior produção, o número de cachos deverá diminuir. A correlação genotípica geralmente apresentou sinal oposto do que precedia correlação ambiental, evidenciando que as causas genéticas e ambientais influenciam o número de cachos e a produção por meio de mecanismos fisiológicos distintos. Com base no método de componentes principais aplicado à matriz de correlação, o período mínimo de colheitas foi de quatro anos, com confiabilidade de 87,6% e coeficiente de repetibilidade de 0,64.

The phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlations between the number of palm fruit bunches and the annual yield and their combinations in African palm were estimated. There were also estimated the coefficients of repeatability and determination, with the objective of indicating the lowest number of successive harvests required to exploit the genotypic potential of the evaluated progenies. The genotypic correlation between the number of bunches per plant and the yield was negative, indicating that when genotypes with a higher yield are selected the number of bunches decreases. In general, the signal of the genotypic correlation differed was opposite to the one from the environmental correlation, evidencing that genetic and environmental factors influence the number of bunches and yield through different physiological mechanisms. Based on the method of principal components applied to the correlation matrix, at least four years of evaluation seem to be necessary, values coefficients of reliability and repeatability were 87.6% e 0.64, respectively.

Visando quantificar os efeitos diretos e indiretos de componentes de produção sobre as variáveis tonelada de cana por hectare (TCH) e massa média de colmos (MMC) foram realizadas análises de trilha fenotípicas e genotípicas. Dezessete famílias híbridas foram avaliadas no delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, no Centro de Pesquisa e Melhoramento da Cana-de-Açúcar (CECA), da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, com o plantio realizado em janeiro de 2000. Foram definidas como componentes de produção as variáveis: altura de colmos (AC), diâmetro de colmos (DC) e número de colmos (NC). As variáveis MMC e NC podem ser utilizadas na seleção indireta de famílias mais produtivas, uma vez que tiveram efeitos diretos positivos e elevados sobre TCH. Apesar de AC e DC estarem altamente correlacionadas com MMC, apenas DC mostrou elevado efeito genético direto sobre MMC, sendo uma variável importante a ser considerada na seleção indireta de famílias com maior massa média de colmos.

Phenotypic and genetic path analyses were carried out in order to quantify direct and indirect effects of production components on the variable ton of stalks per hectare (TSH) and mean stalk weight (MSW). Seventeen hybrid families were evaluated on a randomized complete block design with four replicates, at the Centro de Pesquisa e Melhoramento da Cana-de-Açúcar - CECA of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Minas Gerais State. Planting was carried out in January 2000. The following variables were defined as production components: stalk height (SH), stalk diameter (SD) and stalk number (SN). The results indicated that the variables MSW and SN can be used for indirect selection of high yielding families, since they showed positive and high direct effects on TSH. Despite SH and SD showed high correlation with MSW, only SD showed high direct genetic effect on MSW, demonstrating the importance of this variable for indirect selection of families with higher mean stalk weight.
